Ammouliani

GEOGRAPHY
Ammouliani is the only inhabited island with a permanent population (approx 600 residents) in Halkidiki. It is situated in the gulf of Mount Athos, at a distance of approx.130 kilometres from Thessaloniki and is connected to the mainland with a ferry boat service with the opposite coast of Tripiti. The itineraries of the boats are in regular time intervals throughout the day.
It has an extent of 4,5 kilometres. There are lots of hills and small valleys on the island which have blended in with the olive trees and low vegetation but there are no systematic cultures so the ecosystem remains untouched.
The coasts present a variety of small shaped creeks with splendid sandy beaches.
Weather conditions are not characterized by intense and we should remark that although an island, there are no strong winds especially during the summertime.The residents occupy themselves mainly with fishing and tourism.

HISTORY
Until 1925 the island belonged to the monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos. There were 2-3 monks on the island who managed the land and they had roughly 20 workers as assistants from the around region. The workers dealt with the culture of the fields, the pasture of the animals and the picking of olives. In the beginning of 1925 the island was granted to refugees from the islands of Propontidos (Gallimi - Pasalimani - Skoupia) in Asia Minor.These regions were very near the city of Istamboul,so they brought their culture and their customs with them. Having the knowledge of the sea, they dealt mainly with fishing and they accomplished to distinguish in this sector in just a few years.

BEACHES
The beaches that one can enjoy are: The ALIKIES, MEGALI AMMOS, AI GIORGIS, KARAGATSI, FAKA, TSASKA, NISAKIA and many more but not less beautiful.

STAY
On the island there are lots of hotels, rented apartments and rooms. There are also two organised Camps for the nature lovers.

THERE ARE 6 SUPER MARKETS, 2 BAKERIES, 1 BUTCHER'S, 8 RESTAURANTS - TAVERNS, 6 SOUVENIR SHOPS , 7 COFFEE BARS, 3 NIGHT CLUBS, 2 PIZZERIAS, 2 CONFECTIONERIES.

Each year Ammouliani accepts thousands of visitors from abroad and all over Greece. Main characteristics are its natural beauty,the spotless seas, the fresh fish and its hospitality.
